Goodman Recalls PTAC Units Due to Power Cord Fire and Burn Hazards

Goodman Company is recalling approximately 233,500 packaged terminal air conditioners and heat pumps because power cords can overheat, posing fire and burn risks.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a significant fire hazard with five reported instances of power cords smoking or catching fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or high-risk fire hazards, warranting a Severe classification.

Plain-English summary

Goodman Company, L.P. of Houston, Texas, is recalling approximately 233,500 Amana, Century, Comfort-Aire, Goodman, and York International Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump (PTAC) units. The recall involves units rated 230/208 volt, 3.5 kW, which are beige and typically installed in walls of hotels, motels, apartment buildings, and commercial spaces. The affected units have serial numbers ranging from 0701009633 through 0804272329, located on the control board plate behind the front cover.

The recall is being conducted because the power cords on these units can overheat, posing burn and fire hazards. Goodman has received five reports of power cords smoking or catching on fire, but no injuries have been reported. The units were sold nationwide through Goodman and heating and cooling equipment dealers from January 2007 through June 2008 for between $700 and $1,000.

Consumers should immediately stop using and unplug the recalled units. They should call the appropriate customer service number or visit www.amana-ptac.com to request a free replacement power cord. Non-commercial owners will receive free installation of the power cord and an inspection of the PTAC control board; if the control board is damaged, a replacement will be installed free of charge. Commercial owners are being contacted directly by Goodman for similar repairs and replacements.
