Plain-English summary

Trident Ultraviolet Corp. is recalling Trident Series 2 ultraviolet sanitation systems for pools. The recall involves about 3,660 units sold nationwide by pool companies from February 2009 through September 2013 for about $600. The systems are gray tubes, 32 inches high by 11 inches in diameter, that are plumbed into pool water circulation pipes and connected to an electrical system. They are used as a secondary sanitation system alongside chemical sanitizers like chlorine or bromine.

The units are being recalled because electrical arcing can cause them to catch fire, posing a fire hazard. There have been 38 reports of the sanitation systems melting and/or catching fire, including one burn injury to a consumer's hand and about $23,000 in property damage.

Consumers should immediately unplug the units from the outlet or, if hard-wired, disconnect the power source or turn it off at the circuit breaker. They should contact Trident toll-free at (855) 522-8200 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or online at www.uvrecall.org, to obtain a free repair kit. The manufacturer, Trident Ultraviolet Corp. of Marina del Rey, Calif., is out of business but is handling this recall.
