Plain-English summary
Nest Labs Inc. of Palo Alto, California, is recalling approximately 440,000 Nest Protect Smoke + CO alarms. The recall is due to a defect in the "Nest Wave" feature, which allows users to temporarily silence alerts by waving an arm near the unit. This feature can prevent the alarm from immediately sounding when activity occurs near the product during a fire. The alarms are made of black or white plastic, are about 5.25 inches square, and were sold from November 15, 2013, to April 3, 2014, for about $130 at retailers including Best Buy, Home Depot, and online at nest.com, amazon.com, bestbuy.com, and homedepot.com.
Nest Labs has received no reports of incidents, injuries, or property damage related to this recall. The alarms came from the factory with the Nest Wave feature enabled. The repair is an automatic electronic update that disables the Nest Wave feature. This update is delivered automatically to devices connected wirelessly to the Internet and linked to a Nest account.
Consumers who have not connected their devices to a wireless network and linked them to a Nest account should do so immediately to receive the update. Consumers who have already connected their devices should confirm the update was received by checking the Nest Sense application to ensure the Nest Wave button is off and grayed out. No further action is required, and consumers can continue to use their devices. For more information, contact Nest Labs at (800) 249-4280 or visit www.nest.com.
