What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (laceration and chipped tooth), but no fatalities or serious injuries requiring hospitalization are mentioned, fitting the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
SR Suntour is recalling approximately 17,000 GT, Giant, and Trek bicycles equipped with specific SR Suntour suspension forks. The recall covers 2011-2012 model year SR Giant Revel 1 and Revel 1W bicycles, 2012 model year GT Avalanche 4.0 and Avalanche 4.0 GTW bicycles, and 2012 model year Trek 3700D and 3900D bicycles. The affected forks have date codes ranging from CK110301 through CK110731 printed on the back of the fork crown.
The suspension fork's internal support tubes can break, which may cause the rider to lose control, fall, and crash. SR Suntour has received 12 reports of incidents involving these forks, including two injuries that resulted in a laceration and a chipped tooth.
These bicycles were sold at specialty bicycle stores nationwide from April 2011 through March 2012 for between $400 and $600. Consumers should stop using bicycles with these forks immediately and return them to any authorized GT, Giant, or Trek dealer for a free repair. For additional information, consumers can contact SR Suntour toll-free at (855) 205-2453 or visit www.srsuntour-cycling.com.
