Comverge Inc. is recalling communication modules installed inside programmable thermostats sold by TXU Energy in North Texas. The recall involves approximately 6,300 units with serial numbers between 1015857 and 1022518, which can be found on the top of the thermostat's plastic housing. The thermostats feature "TXU Energy" and "White Rodgers" printed on the front faceplate.
The communication modules can overheat, posing a risk of fire hazard. Comverge is aware of 13 incidents where the module overheated and damaged the thermostat, with minor smoke damage to the wall reported in at least two of those incidents. The company has not received any reports of injuries.
Consumers should contact Comverge toll-free at (866) 277-7001 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit the company's website at http://www.comverge.com/recall. Comverge will install a new communication module free of charge. Consumers should not attempt to disable or replace the communication module themselves.
