Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning regarding children's metal charm bracelets sold under the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer brand. The notice covers two specific styles: the Bumble Snowman and the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. These bracelets feature winter and Christmas-themed charms, including a snowman, Christmas tree, candy cane, and snowflake.
The warning was issued because laboratory analysis determined that the bracelets contain high levels of cadmium. Testing showed that over 20,000 micrograms of cadmium were released from the snowman charm alone after a 24-hour incubation in simulated stomach acid. Cadmium can be toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. No injuries have been reported in connection with these products.
The bracelets were sold at discount and dollar-type stores nationwide between 2006 and March 2009 for approximately $1. The importer, Buy-Rite Designs of Freehold, N.J., is no longer in business. Consumers should immediately take these charm bracelets away from children and dispose of the jewelry.
