SportsPlay Recalls Playground Equipment Due to Lead Paint Violations
SportsPlay Equipment is recalling specific playground models because handrails and posts contain high levels of lead paint, posing a toxicity risk to young children.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a high-risk hazard (lead paint toxicity) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported illness.
Plain-English summary
SportsPlay Equipment Inc. is recalling approximately 540 units of various playground equipment, including the Tot Town Fun Center, Tot Town Castle Fun Center, Tea Cup Merry Go Round, and several climber models. The recall is due to a violation of the lead paint ban, as the handrails and posts on these units contain high levels of lead paint.
Lead can be toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. The affected products were sold by authorized SportsPlay dealers nationwide from January 2003 through December 2007 for between $1,300 and $5,500. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.
Consumers should stop using the playground immediately if the painted parts have chipped off. SportsPlay has directly contacted consumers with the recalled playgrounds, who will receive free replacement parts. For additional information, consumers can contact SportsPlay at (800) 727-8180 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email [email protected], or visit www.sportsplayinc.com.
