What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a choking and aspiration hazard with a potential for fatal intestinal perforations if multiple magnets are swallowed, but no injuries have been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.
Plain-English summary
Meijer Inc. is recalling approximately 100 toddler girl's hat and mitten sets due to a choking and aspiration hazard. The recalled products feature two magnets sewn into each side of the hat. If the magnets detach, they can be swallowed or aspirated by young children. Swallowing multiple magnets can cause them to attract each other, potentially leading to intestinal perforations or blockages, which can be fatal.
The recalled hats and mittens are cotton with pink, lavender, orange, and aqua green stripes and various prints. Some sets feature dark pink hearts with light pink stripes. The tag on the hat and mitten sets is printed with "Aquarius LTD." The products were manufactured by Aquarius Ltd. of St. Louis, Missouri, and imported from China.
The sets were sold at Meijer stores in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky from August 2008 to October 2008 for about $12. Meijer has received one report of a magnet separating from a hat, but no injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately take these hat and mitten sets away from children and return them to any Meijer store for a refund. For additional information, consumers can contact Meijer at (800) 927-8699 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.aquariusltd.com.
