Plain-English summary
Intermatic Inc. is recalling approximately 240,000 in-wall electronic timers, including models ST01, ST01C, ST01AC, ST01AC70, ST01C70, ST01CL, EI600C, EI600LAC, EI600LAC8, EI600WC, and EI600WC8. These timers are white, off-white, or almond, measure 2 1/2 inches high by 1 3/4 inches wide, and typically replace standard wall switches. The recall includes timers with the "Intermatic" brand name molded on the front, four keypad buttons, and no 3-digit date code stamped on the inside of the cover door. Timers with a 3-digit date code are not included in this recall.
The hazard exists because when consumers attempt to replace the timer's battery, a metal object placed through the battery tray slot can reach internal metal contacts, posing a shock hazard. The company has received twelve reports of consumers receiving a minor shock while changing the timer's battery.
The timers were sold at retailers and electrical distributors nationwide from March 2007 through June 2009 for between $25 and $45. Consumers should not attempt to change the in-wall timer's battery until they receive a repair kit. They should contact Intermatic to obtain a free repair kit with installation instructions.
