What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fuel tank explosion) with reported injuries (burns) and a potential for death, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
BRP U.S. Inc. is recalling approximately 400 Ski-Doo snowmobiles sold nationwide from March 2004 through March 2007. The affected models include the 2005 Expedition TUV 600 H.O. SDI, 2007 Skandic SWT V-800, and 2008 Skandic SWT V-800 and Skandic SUV 600 H.O. SDI. These vehicles were sold at Ski-Doo dealers for between $9,000 and $10,000.
The recall is due to a hazard where an explosion could occur in the fuel tank under extreme cold and dry weather conditions. This risk exists when the tank is partially filled with gasoline at low vapor pressure and the engine is left idling, potentially causing sparking. The company has received four reports of explosions, one of which resulted in burns to the legs, fingers, and face.
Consumers should stop using these vehicles immediately. BRP is sending direct notices to owners, who should contact any Ski-Doo dealer to schedule a free repair. For more information, consumers can call BRP toll-free at (888) 638-5397 or visit www.ski-doo.com.
