Plain-English summary

Trane of Tyler, Texas, is recalling approximately 135,000 stand-alone CleanEffects and American Standard AccuClean air filtration systems. These whole-house units were installed with consumers' air handlers or furnaces and sold nationwide through independent dealers from December 2005 through June 2007 for about $1,400 installed. The recall includes specific models with serial numbers prior to 7222*****; models with other serial numbers, integrated models, and those with the "Perfect Fit" upgrade are not affected.

The recall is due to a fire hazard. Electrical arcing inside the collection cells can cause the material to overheat or ignite. Trane has received twelve reports of overheating and property damage limited to HVAC equipment. No injuries have been reported.

Consumers should stop using the recalled systems immediately. To turn off the system, push and hold the round power button on the front of the air cleaner door for about three seconds until the LED panel illuminates, then release the button. Affected consumers will be notified directly about receiving a free replacement collection cell. Owners can contact Trane toll-free at (800) 945-5884 or visit the relevant manufacturer website for more information.
