Plain-English summary
Trane and American Standard, divisions of American Standard Inc. of Tyler, Texas, are recalling approximately 18,200 gas-electric heating and cooling units. The recall involves 2- through 5-ton packaged units that combine gas heat and air conditioning and are installed outdoors. Indoor gas furnaces are not included in this recall. The units were sold by independent dealers and installers between October 2003 and December 2004.
The recall is being issued because a crack in the gas valve body near the inlet pipe connection can cause a gas leak. This can lead to a build-up of gas in the burner compartment, which could be ignited by an internal spark. Trane has received five reports of gas valve cracks, but no injuries or property damage have been reported.
Consumers with recalled units are being contacted by the independent dealers that installed them. Those who believe they have a recalled unit but have not been contacted should call their installer for more information. Consumers can also use their model and serial numbers to check the companies' websites to confirm if their unit is included. Affected units have model numbers beginning with YCP, YCX, YCY, or YCZ and specific serial number ranges. Consumers should contact their installer to arrange for a free inspection. For more information, consumers can call Trane/American Standard toll-free at (888) 556-0125 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or visit www.trane.com or www.americanstandardair.com.
