These units were manufactured by Qingdao Haier Air Conditioner in China and sold by Trane distributors to commercial customers, such as hotels and office buildings, from May 2006 to July 2006. The recall includes 208-, 230-, and 265-volt models manufactured between March 2006 and July 2006, with date codes F06C through F06G.

The recall is being issued because the heating element on these units can become displaced. If the element contacts metal, it can short-circuit. On 265-volt models, this short circuit can allow the unit to remain energized while the fan is off, causing the unit to overheat and smoke. During installation testing, individuals observed smoking and smelled a burning odor in three units. No injuries have been reported.

Trane has contacted affected customers directly to arrange for repairs. The remedy involves rewiring or replacing power connectors and visually inspecting and replacing heaters as necessary on 265-volt models. Although no incidents have been reported for 208-volt and 230-volt models, Trane is inspecting these units as a precaution.
