SSC Inc. of Fairfield, N.J., is recalling about 4,000 Safe-Seat Plus Model Infant Seats for Shopping Carts. These gray or red seats are permanently attached to shopping carts in retail stores and feature "SAFE-SEAT +" molded into the side.

The recall is due to a molding defect that caused a UV absorber to separate from the seat surface, resulting in a white chalky powder or residue. This residue could cause skin irritation to children who come into contact with it. No injuries have been reported.

The affected units were sold from June 2005 through December 2005 to grocery stores and other retail stores nationwide that provide shopping carts. Consumers should immediately remove seats with chalky white residue from use and call SSC Inc. at (800) 448-8945 or visit www.seatreplacement.com to arrange for free replacement seats.
