Plain-English summary

Oceanic, of San Leandro, Calif., is recalling approximately 6,100 Versa Pro 2A digital dive computers. The recall involves units with serial numbers 12000 through 18176, which can be viewed on the computer's display or found printed on the side of the unit along with "r2A". This recall does not include other Oceanic brand dive computers or the Versa Pro 2A when operated in normal decompression dive computer mode.

The hazard exists when the dive computer is set for "User Selected Digital Gauge Mode." In this mode, the "Elapsed Dive Time" displayed can exceed the actual elapsed time underwater. This discrepancy can cause divers to ascend before fulfilling a decompression obligation, resulting in decompression sickness. Oceanic has received one report of the dive computers malfunctioning, but no injuries have been reported.

Authorized Oceanic dealers sold these computers nationwide from March 2003 through April 2006 for between $430 and $640. Consumers should discard this recalled product, as the remedy is no longer available. For more information, consumers can contact Oceanic toll-free at (888) 854-4960 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or e-mail [email protected].
