Plain-English summary
Olympus America Inc. is recalling various Olympus-brand 35mm film cameras, including the Infinity Twin, AF-1 Twin, Infinity Zoom 200 series, AZ 200 series, and Quantary Infinity Zoom 222 models. The recall covers approximately 1.2 million units sold in the United States. These cameras feature a built-in flash and were sold at department, electronic, and camera stores, as well as mail-order retailers, from January 1989 through December 1995 for between $220 and $365.
The recall is due to a defect in the flash circuit that can cause the camera to smoke and overheat when turned on. This malfunction poses a possible burn hazard to consumers. Olympus has received 21 reports of camera or flash circuitry overheating in the U.S., but there have been no reports of injuries.
Consumers should stop using these cameras immediately. To receive a free repair for this defect, consumers should contact Olympus at (800) 480-1247 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the company's website at www.olympusamerica.com.
