L.L. Bean Recalls Safety Kits Due to Flashlight Magnet Interference

L.L. Bean is recalling safety kits because the flashlight's magnet can disrupt compasses and implantable cardiac defibrillators.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (potential ICD disruption) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

L.L. Bean is recalling approximately 4,100 Auto Safety Kits, Auto Aid in a Bottle, Winter Safety Kits, and Outdoorsman in a Bottle kits. These kits were sold at L.L. Bean stores, catalogs, and websites from August 2005 through November 2005 for between $20 and $60. Each kit contains a "Forever Flashlight" that uses a powerful magnet and copper coil for manual recharging.

The recall is due to the flashlight's magnet, which can adversely affect the polarity of a compass, rendering it unreliable. Additionally, the magnet could be powerful enough to disrupt an Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) in a heart patient. The product packaging also lacks appropriate warning information regarding these risks.

There have been no reported incidents or injuries associated with these products. Consumers with recalled kits should contact L.L. Bean immediately to receive a free warning label for the flashlight. Consumers with Outdoorsman in a Bottle kits will receive a free replacement compass and whistle.
