Brave Products Inc. is recalling about 4,000 log splitters because defective hydraulic cylinders can cause rods to detach, posing a serious injury risk to operators.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the hazard can result in serious injury, but the source text explicitly states that no injuries have been reported, which caps the score at 3 per the rubric.
Plain-English summary
Brave Products Inc. is recalling approximately 4,000 log splitters sold nationwide from June 2003 through October 2004. The affected models are the Brave VH0234 (34 ton), VH9926 (26 ton), VH9922 (22 ton), and HB0115 (15 ton). These steel log splitters are painted orange and black and feature trailer hitches and rubber tires. The specific serial number ranges for each model are listed in the official recall notice.
The recall is due to a defect in the hydraulic cylinders where rod retention can fail, causing seals to leak and the rods to detach. This failure can cause the splitting wedge to extend rapidly and unexpectedly, which poses a risk of serious injury to the operator. Brave Products has received 14 reports of leaking cylinders and/or rod retention failure, but no injuries have been reported.
The log splitters were sold at Ace, True Value, and Do It Best Hardware stores and independent power equipment dealers for between $899 and $1,999. Because Brave Products Inc. is out of business, a standard recall remedy is no longer available. Consumers should destroy and discard the product. For more information, consumers can call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054).
