Plain-English summary
Procter & Gamble is recalling approximately 175,000 units of the Swiffer Sweep+Vac battery-operated vacuum cleaner. The recalled product is an upright vacuum cleaner that stands about 4 feet tall, featuring a green base and a silver pole with "Swiffer" printed in white letters on the front. The specific units involved have UPC numbers 37000-46522 and 37000-02553, which are printed on the product packaging. No other Swiffer products are included in this recall.
The recall was initiated because, in some cases, leaving the vacuum cleaner in the "on" position can cause the rotor to lock up, leading to overheating. This malfunction poses a smoke and fire hazard. Procter & Gamble has received 14 complaints regarding the unit overheating, including one report of a fire that resulted in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.
The affected vacuum cleaners were sold at retail and grocery stores nationwide from September 2004 through November 2004 for approximately $30. Consumers should stop using the product immediately and disconnect the vacuum cleaner by removing the top section of the pole. To do this, press the small green button on the pole, located about 12 inches below the handle, and pull the handle straight out. This action eliminates the possibility of the unit overheating. Consumers can contact Procter & Gamble at (800) 395-5594 or visit www.swiffer.com to receive shipping materials for returning the unit and obtaining a free replacement coupon.
