The recall involves units manufactured between January 1, 2004, and September 17, 2004, and sold at appliance stores nationwide for about $2,000. The model name and serial number are located on a label on the vent fan housing in the cabinet under the cooktop.
The recalled cooktops have switches located too close to the gas tubing leading to the grill burner. This proximity allows electrical arcing to cause the tubing to leak gas, which can ignite and result in a fire hazard. Maytag has received four reports of cooktops catching fire during use due to this gas leak, but there have been no reports of injuries.
Consumers should stop using the grill or the burners activated by the two left-hand controls until the repair is completed. The center and right-hand burners can continue to be used.
