Bilt-Safe Technologies Inc. is recalling approximately 60,000 electric blankets, including 13,720 sold directly to consumers. The recalled automatic warming blankets were sold in blue or beige colors under the Bilt-Safe and Comfort Max brand names. They were available in sizes to fit all mattresses and feature a removable temperature controller that plugs into a module at the bottom of the blanket. The specific model numbers affected are BST-03-A-F, BST-03-A-K, BST-03-A-Q, and BST-03-A-T, which are located on a tag sewn to the blanket.

The recall was issued because the blankets can overheat if the temperature controller is reset multiple times or if the blanket is folded or covered with additional blankets. This overheating can result in smoldering and melting, posing a burn hazard to consumers. Bilt-Safe has received 86 reports of the blankets overheating or charring, including three reports of minor skin burns.

The recalled units were sold nationwide from October 2003 through February 2004 at Family Dollar Stores, Peebles Inc., and Le Roux at Home stores for between $40 and $100. The blankets were manufactured in China. Because the firm is out of business, a remedy is no longer available.
