Plain-English summary
The Weil-McLain Company is recalling approximately 1,700 Ultra 155 and Ultra 230 gas boilers. These are high-efficiency, gas-fired boilers used for space heating. The recall was initiated because the gas valve mounting screws may not have been fully tightened during assembly and could have come loose during transportation.
Loose gas fittings could result in leaking gas, which poses a risk of fire and/or explosions that could cause bodily injuries or property damage. The company has not reported any injuries or incidents related to this defect. The affected units were sold nationally to plumbing and heating wholesale distributors, who then sold them to plumbers and contractors, from December 2002 through February 2003 for approximately $4,500 each.
Weil-McLain is providing distributors and installers with a "Safety Notice" package that includes instructions, replacement screws, and a reimbursement form. Installers are instructed to tighten the gas valve union and will be reimbursed $50 for each boiler inspected. Consumers can contact Weil-McLain at 219-879-6561 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, or visit www.weil-mclain.com for more information.
