The recall is being conducted because the bamboo-stick handles can catch fire, burn, and disintegrate during use, emitting burning fragments. This presents a fire hazard and a risk of burn injury. CPSC and Fireworks of Alabama have not received any reports of injuries associated with these sparklers; the recall is intended to prevent the possibility of injuries.

These sparklers were sold nationwide in variety stores from June 2002 through December 2002 for about $2 a box. Consumers should stop using these sparklers immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund.
