Tough Traveler Ltd. is recalling 135 Tough Traveler® backpack carriers sold between December 2000 and February 2002. The recall is due to a safety hazard where the seat restraint strap, located between the child's legs, could slip through the slider if not doubled back. This poses a risk of a child falling from the carrier if the carrier's safety harness is not used.
The affected carriers feature metal contoured frames and were sold in blue and teal, natural and teal, or slate and teal color combinations. They were sold through specialty baby and outdoor product retail stores, the Tough Traveler website, and by mail order for between $157 and $186. Only certain Kid Carrier™, Filly™, and Stallion™ models sold during this period are included in the recall.
Tough Traveler has received one report of a strap slipping through the slider without the safety harness being used, but the child did not fall and no injuries have been reported. Consumers should stop using these carriers immediately and contact Tough Traveler at (800) GO-TOUGH to receive instructions on how to double back the strap through the slider.
