What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fire and burn hazards) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
Young's J.K. Inc. is recalling approximately 1,800 novelty cigarette lighters shaped like "Coca Cola" and "Budweiser" beverage cans. These refillable, gas-fueled, piezo-electric lighters are attached to keyrings and were sold for about $3 each.
The recall is being conducted because the lighters do not have child-resistant mechanisms, as required by federal law. Young children could ignite the lighters, posing fire and burn hazards. CPSC and Young's J.K. Inc. have not received any reports of injuries or incidents, but the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries.
The lighters were sold from October 2001 through February 2002 at grocery, gift, and liquor stores, smoke shops, and gas station food marts in Oregon and southwest Washington. Consumers should stop using these lighters immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information, call Young's J.K. Inc. collect at (503) 252-3022 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.
