The recalled fixtures were sold in various shapes and sizes, including domes, cylinders, and rectangles. These lights were sold nationwide through electricians and electrical supply companies from March 1998 through July 1999 for about $90 each.
The recall is being issued because the lights are improperly wired, which poses a fire hazard. Progress Lighting has received two reports of these fluorescent lights smoking and smoldering, but no injuries have been reported. The recalled lights feature a white Underwriters Laboratories label on the fixture's housing, under the white plastic lens, containing the manufacturer's name, a manufacture date between March 1998 and March 1999, and specific catalog numbers.
Consumers should stop using the recalled lights immediately and contact Progress Lighting to schedule an in-house repair. Consumers should turn off the power before removing the lens to examine the lights.
