Plain-English summary
Double L Inc. of Charlotte, N.C., is recalling approximately 180,000 DIY multi-purpose lighters. The lighters, which are 10-1/2 inches long with a black handle, red trigger, and silver barrel, were sold nationwide at Joann Stores, Family Dollar Stores, Bill Dollar Stores, and Hancock Fabrics from December 1998 to December 1999 for $1 to $2. The brand name "DIY" appears on the cardboard display sleeve but not on the lighter itself.
The recall is due to a hazard where the lighters can leak butane when ignited, resulting in an excessive burst of flame. This defect presents a risk of fire and burn injuries to consumers. Double L has received five reports of excessive flame bursts that resulted in burns to consumers.
Consumers should stop using the lighters immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. For more information, consumers can call Double L Inc. at (800) 253-1399 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
