Plain-English summary
AmeriGas Propane L.P. is recalling approximately 1,600 20-pound propane cylinders that were sold or exchanged in 19 northeast Ohio counties between December 2000 and February 15, 2001. The cylinders are white and originally featured a red, white, and blue shrink-wrapped sleeve with the names "AmeriGas," "Prefilled Propane Xchange," and "PPX(r)." Cylinders with a blue ink six-digit code below the collar starting with X and ending in 7 are not included in this recall.
The recall is due to the risk that these cylinders could be overfilled, which may cause them to release flammable propane gas unexpectedly, leading to fires or explosions. On July 19, 2000, overfilled cylinders vented propane and ignited, causing an explosion at an AmeriGas plant in Willoughby, Ohio, where one worker suffered minor burns. No consumer injuries have been reported.
Consumers who purchased or exchanged these cylinders should not use their propane appliances or disconnect or transport the cylinder. They should contact AmeriGas at (888) 428-9779 or visit www.amerigas.com for instructions on having the cylinder inspected and replaced if necessary.
