Plain-English summary
AmeriGas Propane L.P. is recalling approximately 100 "Prefilled Propane Xchange" or "PPX" gas grill cylinders. The cylinders are white and were sold with a shrink-wrapped sleeve displaying the "AmeriGas" and "PPX" names. The recall is due to a defect where about 10 of the cylinders may have been overfilled, which can cause them to release flammable propane gas unexpectedly.
On July 19, 2000, some of the overfilled cylinders vented propane and ignited, causing an explosion at the AmeriGas plant in Willoughby, Ohio. One worker suffered minor burns in this incident. No consumer injuries have been reported. The cylinders were sold or exchanged at Home Depot and Meijer's stores in the Detroit, Michigan area, between July 17 and July 19, 2000. Prices ranged from $44 to $48 for new cylinders and $13 to $14 for exchanges.
Consumers who purchased or exchanged these cylinders should not use their gas grills or other appliances, and should not disconnect or transport the cylinder. Consumers should call the AmeriGas toll-free hotline at (888) 428-9779 for instructions on getting their gas cylinder inspected and replaced if needed.
