What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (broken arms, wrist, tooth), but no fatalities or serious injuries requiring hospitalization are explicitly stated, fitting the 'High' criteria for injury reports without severe outcomes.
Plain-English summary
Kent International and Kash 'N Gold Ltd. are recalling approximately 90,000 Kent Kickin' Mini-Scooters and 7,500 Kash 'N Gold Racer X20TM Scooters. The recall addresses a safety defect where the handlebars may unexpectedly detach or break, causing the rider to lose control and fall.
Kent has received four reports of the handles coming out, resulting in four children suffering injuries, including broken arms, a broken wrist, bruises, abrasions, and a cracked tooth. The Kent scooters are chrome-plated steel with a vertical decal reading "KICKIN' MINI SCOOTER" and were sold with black backpacks. The Kash 'N Gold scooters are made of lightweight aluminum with a 20-inch platform and swivel handlebars.
These scooters were sold nationwide at Discovery and Mervyn's stores from August 2000 through September 2000 for between $70 and $100. Consumers should stop riding these scooters immediately. Kent customers should call Kent International to receive a free replacement handlebar with pins. Kash 'N Gold customers should return the scooters to the store of purchase for a refund or a new scooter with a metal "T" joint.
