The recall includes specific 1999 Trek models (520, 2200, 2200T, WSD, 2300, 2300T, 2500, 2501, 5000, 5000T, 5200, 5200T, 5500, 66, 66T, 77) and Klein models (Quantum, Quantum T, Quantum Race). Only road bikes are affected; mountain bikes and mountain bike stems are not included in this recall.

The hazard involves the bolts on the handlebar stems, which can break. This failure can cause the handlebars to detach from the bike, resulting in the rider losing control and crashing. Trek Bicycle Corp. has received three reports of handlebar stems breaking, which resulted in two riders suffering injuries, including a concussion and a broken collarbone.

These bikes and stems were sold by Trek and Klein dealers nationwide from June 1998 through May 1999. The stems were sold separately for about $70, while the road bikes with these stems sold for between $1,000 and $4,000. Consumers with these bikes should stop riding them immediately and take them to a Trek or Klein dealer for a free inspection and replacement stem if needed.
