The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and The Morton Paper Co. of Brooklyn, N.Y., are recalling approximately 4,500 16-inch "PIONEER" brand desk fans. The fans were manufactured in Taiwan and sold at discount stores in the metropolitan New York area from April 1999 through June 2000 for about $20 each. The recalled fans are labeled on the base as "PIONEER, 16" DESK FAN, MADE IN TAIWAN".

The recall was issued because the fans could overheat during use and do not have sufficient guards to prevent possible finger entrapment. These defects present hazards of electrocution, shock, fire, and finger amputation. The CPSC has not reported any injuries associated with these products.
