About USDA FSIS recalls

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) regulates the safety of meat, poultry, and processed egg products. Anything else food-related — produce, seafood, packaged snacks, supplements — falls under the FDA instead. FSIS-regulated recalls are lower volume than FDA's food stream but tend to be higher severity on a per-recall basis because most involve known pathogens or undeclared allergens in protein-heavy products.

FSIS uses the same Class I / Class II / Class III system as the FDA. Class I covers products with a reasonable probability of causing health problems or death. Pathogens that almost always trigger Class I include Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, and Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (especially the O157:H7 serotype). Undeclared major allergens in protein products — milk, eggs, soy, wheat — also default to Class I because allergic shoppers can't see the contamination on the label.

FSIS recall announcements include the establishment number (Est. or EST. on the inspection legend), production dates, and the list of distribution states. We carry all of these through into the recall detail page so you can check your own package against the recalled production run.
