Plain-English summary

Boar's Head Provisions Co., Inc. is recalling approximately 207,528 pounds of ready-to-eat liverwurst and other deli meat products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall includes Strassburger Brand Liverwurst produced between June 11, 2024, and July 17, 2024, as well as several other deli meats, including Virginia Ham, Italian Cappy Style Ham, Bologna, Beef Salami, and Steakhouse Roasted Bacon, produced on June 27, 2024. These products were distributed to retail deli locations nationwide and bear establishment number EST. 12612.

The recall was initiated after a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes. This discovery is part of an ongoing multistate outbreak investigation involving meats sliced at delis. As of July 25, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified 34 sick people in 13 states, including 33 hospitalizations and two deaths. The investigation is ongoing, and FSIS is working with the CDC and state public health partners.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects pregnant women, adults aged 65 or older, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Consumers should check their deli counters for the affected products and contact a healthcare provider if they are concerned about illness.
