Plain-English summary
Shirk's Meats, a Dundee, New York establishment, is recalling approximately 2,478 pounds of pork and beef products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected items, which include smoked hams, snack sticks, sausages, hotdogs, and other ready-to-eat meats, were produced between April 1, 2015, and May 12, 2015. These products were shipped to various retail locations in New York and bear the establishment number EST. 18894 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The recall was initiated after routine sampling by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) in May 2015 found Listeria monocytogenes in environmental samples, product-contact surfaces, and ready-to-eat products. This followed construction work at the facility in early April 2015. Additional sampling by FSIS and the establishment confirmed the contamination.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, or premature delivery. FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. Persons in higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and inform their provider about the consumption.
