2024 Hyundai Tucson Tow Hitch Wiring May Cause Fire or Lighting Failure
Hyundai is recalling 2022-2024 Tucson vehicles with optional tow hitch wiring that may have been installed incorrectly. Water can enter the control module, causing trailer lighting failure or electrical short circuits that increase crash and fire risks.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall is classified as High because the defect presents a risk of serious harm—electrical fire and crash from failed trailer lighting—in the absence of reported injuries or fires. The criteria for higher severity would require reported deaths, serious injuries, or property damage, which have not been documented in this recall.
Plain-English summary
Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2022, 2023, and 2024 Hyundai Tucson vehicles equipped with an optional Mobis tow hitch wiring harness. The wiring harness may have been installed incorrectly, allowing water to enter the trailer lighting control module.
Moisture accumulation in the control module may cause the trailer lights to fail or result in an electrical short circuit. A failure of the trailer lights increases the risk of a crash. An electrical short circuit increases the risk of a fire.
Hyundai has notified owners by mail, with notification letters sent on May 11, 2026. Dealers will install a protective cap on the wiring at no cost to the vehicle owner. Hyundai advises owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the repair is completed.
