Ford Recalls 2021 F-150s for Transmission Software Update
Ford is recalling 2021 F-150 vehicles previously repaired under recall 22V-188 because a software error may cause the transmission to unexpectedly shift into neutral, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission shifting to neutral) that causes loss of drive power and explicitly increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2021 F-150 vehicles that were previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 22V-188. The recall addresses a defect in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software where the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for low transmission fluid pressure may falsely activate. This malfunction can cause the transmission to unexpectedly shift into neutral while driving.
An unexpected shift into neutral results in a loss of drive power, which increases the risk of a crash. The affected vehicles are 2021 model year Ford F-150s.
Dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software free of charge to correct the issue. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 22, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for more information. Ford's number for this recall is 25S24. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
