2018–2022 BMW X3 rear cargo rail attachment defect recall

BMW is recalling 2018–2022 X3 vehicles because rear cargo rail attachment bolts may become damaged in a rear crash, causing the rail to detach and increasing injury risk. Dealers will replace the bolts free of charge.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Structural vehicle defect involving cargo rail attachment bolts with potential for detachment during rear crashes, increasing injury risk. No injuries reported to date, classifying this as a risk-of-harm scenario without confirmed harm.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 BMW X3 sDrive30i, xDrive30i, M40i, and M vehicles. The recall concerns the attachment bolts for the rear cargo rail.

The attachment bolts for the rear cargo rail may become damaged during a rear crash. When this occurs, the interior rear cargo rail may detach from the vehicle.
