NHTSA safety advisory
Park this vehicle outside
NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.
This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (power liftgate module) that may lead to a vehicle fire, which falls under the 'Severe' criteria for structural vehicle defects or significant injury/property-damage reports.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. The recall addresses a potential electrical short in the power liftgate module that may lead to a vehicle fire, whether the ignition is on or off.
A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.
Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. Additionally, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826, and vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.
