2023 BMW X5 Head Restraints May Fail in Crash

BMW is recalling approximately 235 certain 2023 X5 vehicles with defective second-row head restraints that may not properly restrain occupants during a crash, violating federal safety standards.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect in a critical crash safety component that fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 202. Head restraints may not properly restrain occupants during a crash, increasing the risk of serious injury.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America is recalling approximately 235 certain 2023 X5 vehicles, including the sDrive40i, xDrive40i, M50i, M, and xDrive45e models. The head restraints on the second-row outboard seats may have been improperly manufactured without locking tabs in the guide sleeves.

These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 202 (Head Restraints). A head restraint without a proper locking tab may not restrain an occupant correctly during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Owners were notified by mail on May 31, 2023. Dealers will inspect and replace the second-row outboard seat head restraint guide sleeves at no charge. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
