Bentley vehicles recalled for incorrect airbag deployment information in owner manuals
Bentley is recalling certain 2021-2022 vehicles because the owner's manual incorrectly states the airbag will not deploy when the Passenger Airbag On symbol is illuminated. This could cause unsafe positioning during a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No illnesses or injuries have been reported, and the hazard is theoretical per the rubric. However, the incorrect information concerns airbag deployment—a safety-critical system—and could lead occupants to position themselves dangerously in the event of a crash. This fits the criterion 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported,' resulting in a High severity score.
Plain-English summary
Bentley Motors, Inc. is recalling certain 2021-2022 Bentayga, Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Continental GT Convertible vehicles. The owner's manual for these vehicles contains incorrect information about the airbag system, specifically stating that the air bag will not deploy when the "Passenger Airbag On" symbol is illuminated. This statement is incorrect and the vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208 (Occupant Crash Protection).
The incorrect information in the owner's manual could cause occupants to position themselves unsafely in relation to the airbags, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash. If occupants believe the airbag will not deploy, they may sit too close to the dashboard or airbag deployment zone.
Bentley is correcting this issue by mailing corrected labels to all affected owners. Owners may apply the label themselves or have a Bentley dealer apply it free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 10, 2022. For more information, owners can contact Bentley customer service at 1-800-777-6923, or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
