Honda Recalls 2017-2018 Civic Hatchback and Type R for Missing Owner's Guide

Honda is recalling 2017-2018 Civic Hatchback and Type R vehicles because the owner's guide may be missing or lack required child restraint information.

What this means for you

Cosmetic or documentation issue. No expected health impact, but the manufacturer is correcting the affected products.

Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a documentation issue (missing or improper owner's guide) rather than a mechanical defect, fitting the rubric criteria for 'documentation issues' or 'packaging-only problems' which are classified as Low severity.

Plain-English summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Honda Civic Hatchback and Civic Type R vehicles. The recall involves 7,016 vehicles where the owner's guide may not have been included, or if included, may not have provided the required information regarding child restraint anchorage systems.

This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems." If the required information is missing or improper, it can increase the risk of injury or a crash.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the owners information kit free of charge. The recall began on January 9, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is O3A. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
