Highland Ridge RV Recalls 2018 Open Range Trailers for Incorrect Weight Label

Highland Ridge RV is recalling 84 units of the 2018 Open Range light travel trailer because the Federal Label lists an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating.

What this means for you

Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a labeling error that creates a risk of overload and tire wear, but no injuries or crashes have been reported, fitting the criteria for moderate severity.

Plain-English summary

Highland Ridge RV is recalling certain 2018 Open Range light travel trailers, model 312BHS. The recall affects 84 vehicles. The Federal Label on these vehicles incorrectly lists the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) as 5,100 lbs when the correct rating is 4,400 lbs. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

The incorrect GAWR information may result in the trailer being overloaded, which can cause the tires to wear prematurely and increase the risk of a crash.

Highland Ridge will notify owners, and dealers will replace the incorrect Federal Label with a corrected label, free of charge. The recall began on February 7, 2018. Owners may contact Highland Ridge customer service at 1-260-768-7771. Highland's number for this recall is 9904374. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
