Erwin Hymer is recalling 2016-2018 Hymer Aktiv recreational vehicles because the exhaust pipe may melt the rear bumper and wiring, increasing crash and burn risks.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where exhaust heat can cause burns to occupants or bystanders and disable taillights, increasing the risk of a crash.

Plain-English summary

Erwin Hymer Group North America, Inc. is recalling certain 2016-2018 Hymer Aktiv recreational vehicles. These vehicles are built on RAM Promaster chassis and equipped with a Continental kit (CK). The recall involves 195 units.

The defect involves the exhaust pipe, which may melt the rear bumper cover and the vehicle wiring in that area. This exhaust heat can melt the taillight wiring, causing the tail light not to function, which increases the risk of a crash. Additionally, the exhaust heat can burn anyone who contacts the bumper cover immediately after the vehicle has been operated.

Erwin Hymer has notified owners, and dealers will install a new tailpipe that redirects the exhaust down, away from the bumper area, free of charge. The recall began on September 1, 2017. Owners may contact Erwin Hymer customer service at 1-844-464-3735 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
