What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the trailer hitch may separate, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Jeep Renegade vehicles manufactured between August 25, 2014, and June 25, 2016. This recall applies specifically to vehicles equipped with a factory-installed optional trailer hitch package. The defect involves the trailer hitch assembly potentially being attached with only a single fastener per side, rather than the required three per side.
Without the proper amount of fasteners, the trailer hitch assembly may separate from the vehicle. If this occurs, any towed vehicle may no longer be properly connected, which increases the risk of a crash. The recall began on October 13, 2016.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install two additional fasteners per side free of charge. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S62. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
