Forest River Charleston Motorhomes Recalled for Brake Signal Defect
Forest River is recalling 2014-2016 Charleston motorhomes because a brake signal may remain active, causing towed device brakes to overheat and potentially catch fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect could result in a fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving fire risk.
Plain-English summary
Forest River, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Charleston Class A motorhomes manufactured between September 16, 2013, and September 25, 2016. These vehicles were built on certain Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) chassis. The recall affects 147 units.
On certain motorhome chassis equipped with a heavier, adjustable foot pedal, the brake activation signal sent to towed devices may not deactivate when the motorhome's service brakes are released. If this occurs, the brakes on the towed device may remain engaged, causing them to drag and overheat, which could result in a fire. Additionally, following drivers may be confused by the motorhome's actions, increasing the risk of a crash.
Forest River will notify owners, and DTNA dealers will modify the affected brake assemblies free of charge. The recall began on June 23, 2016. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
