Hillsboro Aluminum Utility Trailer Recall for Axle Hardware Defect
Hillsboro is recalling 2016 aluminum utility trailers because improperly installed axle hardware may cause the axle to shift, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (axle attachment) that may cause the trailer to pull to one side, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Hillsboro Industries is recalling certain model year 2016 Open Aluminum Utility Trailers manufactured between November 6, 2015, and April 1, 2016. This recall involves trailers with a 2,990 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) where the axle attachment hardware may have been improperly installed. As a result, the axle may not remain secured and aligned.
If the axle shifts, the trailer may pull to one side, which increases the risk of a crash. Hillsboro believes that all affected trailers were quarantined at dealers before being sold; therefore, owner notifications will not be sent. Dealers will correct the axle mounting free of charge. The recall began on April 14, 2016.
Owners may contact Hillsboro customer service at 1-316-947-3127. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
