Open Range Journeyer Trailers Recalled for Underrated Safety Chains
Open Range is recalling 2012-2015 Journeyer trailers because the safety chains are not rated high enough to support the trailer's weight if the main connection fails.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where safety chains are rated below the vehicle's GVWR, creating a risk of trailer separation and crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Open Range R.V. Company is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Journeyer trailers, specifically models JT 337 RLS and JT340FLR, manufactured between September 6, 2011, and April 30, 2014. A total of 387 vehicles are affected by this recall.
The affected trailers are equipped with safety chains on the A-frame that are rated for 11,700 lbs, which is less than the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the travel trailer. If the main trailer connection fails, the weight of the trailer could break these insufficiently rated chains, allowing the trailer to separate from the towing vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
Open Range will notify owners, and dealers will replace the existing safety chains with chains rated for 16,200 lbs at no charge. The recall began on February 29, 2016. Owners may contact Open Range customer service at 1-260-768-7771 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
