Stoughton Barrett P Gooseneck Trailers Recalled for Coupler Weight Rating Mismatch
Stoughton is recalling 2015-2016 Barrett P gooseneck trailers because the upper coupler rating is lower than the trailer's GVWR, risking separation.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (coupler failure) that could lead to trailer separation and a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Stoughton Trailers, LLC is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Barrett P gooseneck trailers manufactured between July 1, 2014, and December 31, 2015. The affected trailers have an Upper Coupler Section with a Gross Trailer Weight Rating (GTWR) of 25,000 lbs, but the trailers are assigned a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of over 25,000 lbs.
If a trailer is loaded past 25,000 lbs, the upper coupler may fail. This failure could cause the trailer to separate from the tow vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Stoughton will notify owners. Depending on the trailer's GVWR, dealers will either replace the upper coupler slide-in inner tube or the trailer will need to be returned to the manufacturer for a full upper coupler replacement. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began on March 11, 2016. Owners may contact Stoughton customer service at 1-608-873-2500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
