What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (brake fluid) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for potential decreased braking performance and crash risk.
Plain-English summary
American Grease Stick Company (AGS) is recalling certain bottles of Carquest DOT5 Silicone Brake Fluid manufactured between October 9, 2013, and September 15, 2015. The affected bottles may not clearly display the minimum wet equilibrium reflux boiling point (ERPB) rating and may lack the words "Motor Vehicle" on the label where required. As a result, these bottles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 116, "Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids."
The recall affects 12,638 units. If a customer is confused by the label, they might use the wrong brake fluid, which could result in decreased braking performance and increase the risk of a crash. This recall supersedes the previous campaign 15V-093.
AGS has notified all known affected purchasers. Bottles will be returned and relabeled with the correct label free of charge. Owners may contact AGS customer service at 1-800-253-0403 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
